Behavior Changes in SIS STD Models with Selective Mixing
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose and analyze a heterogeneous, multigroup, susceptible-infectivesusceptible (SIS) sexually transmitted disease (STD) model where the desirability and acceptability in partnership formations are functions of the infected individuals. We derive explicit formulas for the epidemic thresholds, prove the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium states for the two-group model and provide a complete analysis of their local and global stability. We then investigate the effects of behavior changes on the transmission dynamics and analyze the sensitivity of the epidemic to the magnitude of the behavior changes. We verify that if people modify their behavior to reduce the probability of infection with individuals in highly infected groups, through either reduced contacts, reduced partner formations, or using safe sex, the infection level may be decreased. However, if people continue to have intragroup and intergroup partnerships, then changing the desirability and acceptability formation cannot eradicate the epidemic once it exceeds the epidemic threshold.

Modeling the Effectiveness of Isolation Strategies in Preventing STD Epidemics
We formulate and analyze a two-group, selective-mixing, susceptible-infective-susceptible (SIS), sexually transmitted disease (STD) model where the infection-dependent desirability and acceptability in partnership formations are zero at high infection levels. We analyze two strategies to limit the spread of the epidemic by avoiding forming partnerships with people in a highly infected group. In...
متن کاملPrediction of Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Using CEOS /GE Models
The present study investigates the use of different GE mixing rules in cubic equations of state for prediction of phase behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems. To predict VLE data in multicomponent symmetric and asymmetric mixtures such as systems that contain light gases (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.) and heavy hydrocarbons, the SRK equation of state has been combined with excess Gib...
متن کاملEpidemic Spreading on Preferred Degree Adaptive Networks
We study the standard SIS model of epidemic spreading on networks where individuals have a fluctuating number of connections around a preferred degree κ. Using very simple rules for forming such preferred degree networks, we find some unusual statistical properties not found in familiar Erdös-Rényi or scale free networks. By letting κ depend on the fraction of infected individuals, we model the...

متن کاملThe Effect of Time Scales on SIS Epidemic Model
The distribution of diseases is one of the most interesting real-world phenomena which can be systematically studied through a mathematical model. A well-known simple epidemic model with surprising dynamics is the SIS model. Usually, the time domains that are widely used in mathematical models are limited to real numbers for the case of continuous time or to integers for the case of discrete ti...
